Platter (African-American) Cemetery (Paxton Township, Ross County) Bainbridge, Ohio Located about a mile east of Bainbridge at the norteast corner of the intersection of Lovers Lane and Swartz Lane, directly across Lovers Lane from Platter (White) Cemetery.
Local lore is that the burials were African-Americans, many brought to Ohio by the Seymour family. The Works Project Administration (WPA) in the 1930s indicated about 150 graves, but only a few stones existed in the mid-1900s. In the early 1990s, the cemetery had a picket fence around it but, by 1999, the fence was gone and the graveyard was in the corner of a pasture with most of the stones down. Readings were made in March 1999 by Bob Casari, Ross County Genealogical Society, with the condition noted at that time. |
