Old Pisgah - Slagle Cemetery
(Concord Township, Ross County)
Goodhope Road
Ohio
Located about 1/3 mile south of Goodhope Road at a point about 1/2 mile east of the Fayette County line. It is not visible from the road, but can be reached from a farm lane by crossing about 1/3 mile of cultivated farm fields. It is marked by a cluster of trees standing alone in the field.
The Pisgah Church was founded in 1811 and a log building was built at the above location. Later, a frame church was erected there which fronted to the east into the graveyard. In 1855, thecongregation moved to a new building on the property of Andrew Ross, three miles south in Buckskin Township on the west side of present CR 55, though the cemetery apparently continued in use until the 1860s. By 1916, no sign of the old frame church at the cemetery existed. Before 1875, the Slagle family obtained the property and the graveyard is also known as the Slagle Cemetery.
Although the burial ground was intact in the 1930s, it has not been maintained and, by 1997, it was almost completely destroyed, being overgrown with trees and brush, so even walking throughit was difficult. Only a small number of the stones existing 60 years earlier could not be found and most were either badly tilted or down. The 1997 reading by Bob Casari is supplemented by information from a reading in the early 1930s by Mrs. Max Dice and several decades later by Margaret Mootz
